The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water (2015)

I have literally no idea what happened in this movie. At some point SpongeBob and his crew leave the sea behind them and appear on land, all suddenly superheroes and aggressively bulked up, to take back a recipe that has been stolen by Antonio Banderas’ bad guy pirate. The film switches from 2D hand drawn animation to 3D, and it’s quite a spectacle to see these guys running riot in our own world for half an hour or so. Beyond that, the film is a bit of a blur; SpongeBob is forced to team up with his nemesis Plankton to hunt down the pirate which provides more lunacy, and by the end you don’t know whether the writers of the film need their heads examined or they’re simply cleverer than me. It’s not as inventive as the original, and not as funny, but to say it was rubbish is pointless, because I really have no idea. 6.5/10
