Cars (2006)

Cars gets a pretty bad press, as far as I can gather it seems to suffer from being the first Pixar vehicle (whay) that dipped below excellent. Cars, following the story of racer Lightning McQueen on his road to redemption after getting lost in the wilderness, is far too long at an almost inexplicable 2 hours, and it really meanders in the middle section. It's baffling considering the subject matter would obviously appeal to an even younger audience than normal. But, the first half an hour is up there with the best and most exciting segments in Pixar's back catalogue, the opening race sequence and surrounding inventiveness are superb, and there are laughs a plenty. It's certainly in a different league to Cars 3 (2017) which is very dull, but in perhaps being overconfident in it's length, Cars falls short of Pixar's previous outings. 6.4/10
