The Death of Dick Long (2019)

Once again, after 2016's bizarre and brilliant Swiss Army Man, director Daniel Scheinert has come up trumps once more in the unconventional stakes. A drug fuelled opening in which we see three friends playing music and seemingly messing about amidst a haze of smoke, is difficult to fully follow with the use of slow mo camera; but we begin to understand why that is as the film progresses. That scene ends with Dick, in very bad shape, being dumped outside the emergency entrance of a hospital, by his two friends Zeke and Earl, who quickly flee the scene. What on earth happened to leave Dick at death's door, a door he swiftly passes through? Well, that's what you spend the film wanting to figure out. The darkly comedic tone is nailed by the film, there's plenty of things you would not normally be laughing at here that will have you howling, but it helps that the characters on both sides of the law are idiotic to the point of despair. The performances by mainly unknowns are fantastic, playing everything absolutely straight, making this utterly ridiculous tale impossible to tear your eyes from. 8.1/10
