Aquaman (2018)

I saw this the day after Zack Snyder's Justice League, but it makes more sense to review it first for chronological reasons I suppose. Without doubt, Aquaman is the lightest of the DC films so far, and I mean that tonally, comedically, and visually. James Wan, who we know can do action-he helmed the second best of the Fast & Furious franchise (Furious 7, second only to Fast Five) is in the directorial chair here, and he does an admirable job of making sure that, of everything thrown at the wall here (the sea wall, if you like) more of it sticks than not. Zack Snyder's DC offerings do tend to end incomprehensibly, with super beings hitting each other loudly, but while Wan's Aquaman does end like that, the underwater battle is actually pretty cohesive, and looks pretty cool. Of course it's far too long at almost two and a half hours, but in essence, this is a quest movie and considering some of the drivel that DC have churned out so far, this could have been so much worse. Some of the dialogue is atrocious, it doesn't all hang together, but I would say I enjoyed this more than both Wonder Women films. The plot is something about Aquaman finding a trident to defeat some lunatic half brother and there's a disagreement about the way a war should be handled or something, but that's all beside the point. Aquaman's not too shabby, and the colour palette and visuals of the underwater scenes really draw you in to this utterly mad world. Although I'm really not sure I can be bothered with Aquaman 2. 6.1/10
