The title of Julie Lecoustre and Emmanuel Marre’s low key drama is somewhat paradoxical; our lead Cassandre (a superb performance from Adele Exarchopoulos) flits from one Tinder date to another as she flies all over the world as a flight attendant for low fares airline, Wing.
We learn early on that Cassandre’s Mum tragically died recently, and she hasn’t faced up to the reality of it yet; she does everything she can to keep busy to avoid addressing her loss. Cassandre often stays in lodgings in whatever city she lands in with her various cabin crews, and we often see her swiping left or right on dating apps whilst sitting at dinner, or sitting on the sofa.
It’s clear that she craves the human contact, but doesn’t want any lasting romance; the emotional baggage she might attain from that sort of arrangement could lead to more grief for her. Zero Fucks Given is an apt title for so many reasons, all of which reveal themselves throughout the film. It’s a tale of the reality of humanity, and much of the film is set in the intimacy of a plane cabin, also exposing us to the behind the scenes workings of a low fares airline, much of which, you’ll be unsurprised to hear, are appalling.
Cassandre is constantly on the fringes of everything she does whilst not at work, be it spending time with her Dad and sister, or ‘relaxing’ in her time away from work. Unless she’s in the cabin doing her job, she’s never quite in the moment. Zero Fucks Given is a terrific film, and although the chances of you finding it on the big screen are almost non-existent, it’s now available to stream on Mubi.
