The One I Love (2014)

This completely passed me by on release, and indeed altogether until I watched it this week. Elisabeth Moss and Mark Duplass are a couple in a failing marriage, and on the advice of their therapist, spend the weekend at house in the country. Reality quickly disappears as it becomes apparent that there is another version of both of them, one in the main cottage and one in the guesthouse. To reveal any more than that would be to give away the films’ crux, but if you’ve seen Coherence (2013) or The Invitation (2015) you’ll know the ball park into which The One I Love falls. Moss is effective in more or less everything she does, and here she shines once more, portraying two different versions of the same character. The same can be said of Duplass, and if the central pair didn’t work, the film would fail as a result. The film doesn’t hit the heights of the other films mentioned in this review (especially Coherence, which remains a minimalist treat) but it’s an enjoyable little comedy thriller, without any particular threat of jeopardy or shock. 6.7/10
