Mike Leigh’s infamous film starring an exquisite David Thewlis in the central role is almost unbearably bleak. Although billed by many as in some ways a black comedy, it’s almost impossible to hang on to the bones of comedy that do puncture the film, such are the dark places that Thewlis’ Johnny goes during Naked, both mentally and physically.
Leigh lays down his intentions in the opening shot as Johnny sexually assaults a woman in a back alley before scarpering, leaving his home town of Manchester by stealing a car and traveling down to London where is ex-girlfriend has recently moved.
Once he’s made himself at home there, he sleeps with her flat mate and makes a general nuisance of himself. He leaves the flat and wanders the streets of London for a good portion of the film, unleashing his world view on anyone who will listen; this is clearly a man who is well read, although probably one who is unwilling to listen to other peoples’ points of views.
Thewlis is astonishing as Johnny, and has since spoken of his unease whilst encapsulating the character; such was Johnny’s loathsome behaviour. Indeed Johnny is a repugnant individual, from minute one he almost deliberately sets out to drive everyone away from him. Leigh’s film is quite some work, although not one that will be an easy watch for many.
