Věra Chytilová’s groundbreaking comedy drama was once again in the top fifty of Sight and Sound’s recent all time list and it’s not hard to see why. There’s not a huge amount of plot to get your head around in this surrealist journey focusing on Marie and Marie as they decide to spoil themselves after coming to the realisation that the entire world itself is spoiled. They spend their time ripping off older men, feasting in lavish restaurants and generally causing chaos is their way of going about business for the duration. This is experimental cinema without a doubt, and Daisies was initially banned on its release in Czechoslovakia for its imagery of wanton women and excessive food wastage which made a mockery of the Czech Communist Party values, not to mention the state censored film industry. Mixing anarchic message with nihilistic pursuit of pleasure, Chytilová’s film also throws in some exceptional animated sequences with some innovative editing resulting in something truly original, and although Daisies won’t be for everyone, if you haven’t seen it it's certainly worth tracking down. 7.4/10

I'm Christian and like everyone, I'm a film critic in the sense that I enjoy watching any film at any time, discussing it, and in the last few years putting pen to paper to offer my thoughts.
